Discussion: Reflecting On Child And Adolescent Development

PSYC 2002: Human Development: Childhood and Adolescence

Like human development, every course you take through Walden University is a journey. You likely start out with some excitement about the material and look forward to exploring a variety of topics.

Think back to each week of this course. As you read the introductions and looked over the Learning Resources, did you find concepts that you could relate to in your own developmental path or in the development of others? If you are a parent, perhaps you changed some of the ways you discipline your child or received confirmation that you were making good choices in your parenting. Perhaps understanding that all children come into this world with their own unique disposition made you feel better if you know a shy child who has to be coaxed to play with others. Or perhaps, you were confused as you read about the complicated patterns of genetic inheritance and wished you could skip that material!

Now, you are nearing the end of our journey in the study of child and adolescent development. This, your final Discussion assignment, is a time to reflect upon your most recent educational journey and to share your experiences.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review your Learning Resources as you:

  • Consider the many theories and research regarding the development of infants, children, and adolescents.
  • Consider the contexts of development and how they help to shape who we become.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post three concepts (e.g., temperament, attachment) or research findings (e.g., outcomes associated with bullying) that most surprised you. Begin by briefly explaining the concepts or research findings for your classmates. Then, for each concept or finding, describe how this new knowledge will help to guide you as a parent or professional. End your post by noting the specific developmental period and topic you found most interesting in this course, and why.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.
