A loss prevention and security program is a means of protecting a hotel’s resources—both people and property. Generally, injuries to the public mirror those among staff. A successful loss prevention and control program depends on full commitment from management. It is the general manager’s responsibility to integrate safety, security, and property conservation into all areas of hotel operation. Loss control is the development of standards and procedures designed to protect the guests and the assets of the hotel from unnecessary loss.

Every hotel must assess its vulnerability in order to tailor a security plan that will meet its needs. The multiple factors to consider include limiting access, monitoring activity, misappropriation of assets, employment guidelines, guest relations, contracts with outside security firms, use of force, arrest, employee locker control, guest room security and safety notices, bank deposits and escort of funds, lost and found, baggage storage, key control, unregistered guests, reporting incidents, and recordkeeping.
