Read Chapter 1: An Introduction to Networking (up to the Chapter Summary) in CompTIA Network+ N10-005 In Depth and the document The OSI Model’s Seven Layers Defined and Functions Explained for a brief explanation of the OSI model, including a mnemonic that may help you remember the different layers of the OSI and their roles.

Consider the types of communication that can occur over a network. Pay attention to the difference between peer-to-peer networks and client-server networks. Note the different types of network topologies and how data is transmitted.

  • Be creative and come up with an analogy to explain network communication to your friends/family who do not understand basic networking.

Example network analogy: DNS servers behave like telephones do when we type in a number that we have in our contact list.
