Nursing and Counseling Theories in Psychotherapy

The issue of mental disorders has been a challenge to most of the people and is still a problem globally. The problem is associated with the psychological factors that impact a person’s life in various ways. This thus requires some form of treatment with is not medicinal but rather psychological in which the counseling process plays a key role in administering the desired treatment (Nursing-theory.org, 2018).

This paper will thus be focusing on the counseling and the nursing theories that would be applied in administering psychotherapy to the patients. We will also be having a look at the analytical view of the ethical and legal implications of counseling patients with the mental disorders or illness.

Nursing and Counseling Theories

Goal attainment theory

This theory gives a description of the interpersonal relationship through which patients grow and develop to achieve particular goals in life. This theory has factored in essential factors that are integral to the achievement of desired goals which include time, stress, roles and space (Wheeler, 2014). The human beings are defined by their social and interactive status which determine their ability to attain particular goals in life through their perception and decision-making process (Nursing-theory.org, 2018). For instance, the patients and nurses or doctors are able to succeed in attaining their objectives through the sharing of information between the patients and the paramedics. This is based on the information provided by the patient through which they could perceive the situations at hand and make decisions in an interactive manner.

The choice for this theory is based on its ability to demonstrate the kind of relationship that exists between the nurses and patients in a bid to attain a common goal of ensuring people are healthy. The theory incorporates the action, reaction processes, and interaction through which the client and nurse share crucial information that would facilitate the medication processes (Nursing-theory.org, 2018). The theory also portrays ways in which people are affected by both the internal and external environments when setting specific goals, exploring mechanisms through which they could achieve them and the resources required for the latter. The action in this context is a reflection of both the physical and mental well-being of an individual in a defined environment.

Cognitive theory

As one of the counseling theories, the cognitive theory focuses on people’s thinking and the way it is prone to particular changes in their daily lives. This theory is problem-oriented and thus the Counselors use this approach in determining the mental state of a patient before the counseling process is initiated (Nursing-theory.org, 2018). This, therefore, means that the counselors or therapists would primarily focus on the patient’s distorted thinking and present situation but not the past events or situation (Wheeler, 2014). This thus makes it easier for the therapists and patients to make the entire counseling process a success. Throughout the practicum period, the therapists must be able to incorporate the skills and knowledge that is connected to the psychotherapy processes.

Goals and objectives

Some of the goals include the following;

  1. To help people to maintain and enhance their health such that they would remain productive socially and economically.
  2. To avail the medical services to all that need them within the societies especially to patients with mental problems.
  3. To reach out to people with mental issues and administer psychotherapy services to the patients.

Some of the objectives include the following;

  1. To be exposed to clinical conditions and learn dos and don’ts in Psychotherapy
  2. To learn approaches and various treatment modalities of psychotherapy.
  3. To learn how to apply theories to psychotherapy.
  1. Readiness to respond to the patients’ needs at any given point and time.

Timeline of practicum activities

The timeline of the practicum activities varies depending on the ability of the person who is undergoing the training to understand and be able to deliver on what is required of him or her. However, the trainees would have to do a lot of practice before they could be experts and specialize in the areas they choose with respect to psychotherapy services. Therefore, the practicum timeline varies in different programs before one qualifies in the field as desired.
