I agree with the statement, “The writing of objectives is not merely a mechanical task but a synthesizing process… the mutual setting of objectives and goals is considered by many educators to be the initial, most important consideration in education process.

Purpose of Objectives and Goals

Objectives are goal directed statements that are used to lead the learner in the appropriate direction to reach the intended goals. The objectives are the intended information that is being delivered to the learners. The objectives are derived from the skills that will be taught to the learner and return demonstrate. The students should be able to carry out the intended task and be able to reach the expected goals (Mito, Koyama, Katahira, Yamaguchi, Kawamorita, Uemura, & Teshima, 2011).

Our objectives are congruent with our strategies of learning. Although goals and objectives are used interchangeably there construction differs drastically. The objectives are measurements of the progress that determines the outcome of the goal we have set of the learning (Grace, & Perry, 2013). Goals are directive actions that are set. In the realm of education it is important to have these goals and objectives as a means to measure the teaching that has been delivered. The goals have a time frame that is to be reached whereas our objectives are the destined target that is measurable. In education it is so important that the learner has a definitive way to measure if the goals have been met. Setting pertinent objectives are very important since it allows the educator to see where the learner may be lacking but just the same it is indicative of showing achievement and success.

Respond#2 Swan’s Initial Post

I agree with the following statement: “The writing of objectives is not merely a mechanical task, but a synthesizing process…the mutual setting of objectives and goals is considered by many educators to be the initial, most important consideration in the education process.” The reason I agree with the statement is because the purpose of objectives is to have a goal, they describe what the students need to know or achieve to successfully pass the course and meet the desired learning outcomes (De Young, 2014). The reason course objectives should be considered first is because it allows the educator to design the curriculum around the objectives, which means that all course content, educational materials, and teaching strategies used will focus on providing the learners with the knowledge and skills they will need to meet the course objectives and achieve the desired learning outcomes. When educators focus on course content and teaching strategies or activities before deciding what the course objectives and learning outcomes should be, the end result is a course where instructional methods and assessments focus on knowledge acquisition rather than higher learning outcomes such as the application of the acquired knowledge and skills (critical thinking) (McDonald, 2014). It is for this reason that during curriculum development, learning objectives and outcomes should be the first step. The objectives need to state the criteria for achievement, be realistic and attainable within the given time frame, and they must by measurable so that when the course and students are evaluated, the educators can determine if the objectives are appropriate or if the y need to be revised along with the curriculum (Iwasiw, 2015).
