Question Description

The First King’s of Nursing April Marie Cannon R.N. Aspen University 11/27/2017 Abstract In this essay I will discuss King’s Conceptual System Theory. Explain the 3 systems and provide examples of each system. How the systems influence goal attainment. How could King’s theory help define a clinical quality problem? Apply this theory to a potential practice quality improvement initiative within your clinical practice. What are some committee’s that can align the outcomes using King’s Conceptual System Theory and what other nursing theory could improve quality of practice initiative? {First Kings Theory} King proposed a conceptual system for nursing around four concepts. Which are social systems, health, perception, and interpersonal relationships. These areas were identified by using inductive and deductive reasoning, critical thinking, and researching nursing literature. (King, 1971). Role, status, social organization, communication, information, and energy were identified as basic concepts of functions of systems. King expressed how important it was to advance your degree and knowledge and how important it was for nursing as a profession. The medical field is always changing and Technology is always changing. In the field of nursing your career you’re always going to have to get a new certification. Regulations change all the time and the state board of nursing are you always need to have clinical certain clinical hours are certain standards to uphold. { Three Interacting Systems } The Theory of Goal Attainment was developed by Imogene King in the early 1960s. The model has three interacting systems: personal, interpersonal, and social. Each of these systems has its own set of concepts. The concepts for the personal system are perception, self, growth and development, body image, space, and time. The concepts for the interpersonal system are interaction, communication, transaction, role, and stress. The concepts for the social system are organization, authority, power, status, and decision-making. As a nurse we have certain goals for ourselves and our patients. Using King’s theory will challenge us to become better nurses. I King’s challenge us as nurses to continue education requirements and to challenge yourself in new ways by using the three systems. {Clinical Quality} King’s theory can help define a clinical quality problems by, Nurse has to know that communication is the key and trust between patient and nurse is most important. Clinical pathways serve that purpose, where nurses communicate to their patients care and outcomes/ goals with working with each other. Nurses need advocate for a common nursing language (nursing classification and terminology systems) that would unify nurses worldwide. Supported by nursing theory and technology, global communication would be enhanced for nurses and the interdisciplinary teams of which they are a part. Making healthcare profession’s have their own language if you will. Kind of how we as nurses have own nursing theories to learn to implement , experiment nursing research and how using nursing theories can help achieve great patient care cost effective great outcomes for our patients. Nurses face different challenges and changes in the recent years and will continue in the future. Many opportunities for nurses to take charge of coming changes to help design the future of healthcare. Growth and development as a nurse profession driven by technology advances healthcare will expand practice and that nurses to have a bigger roles and events practice rolls. The way the women’s movement change the way our world has perceived nursing will become more holistic nursing to patient care. I feel it will increase over time. Healthcare provider receive an information via telecommunications and a decreased face-to-face settings of position. Technology will continue to increase and change in practice nurses demand. Non physician providers will increase in numbers in a little responsibility for they are patients care you increase education for nurses will change to meet new demands as I said before the medical Field is always changing and technology is always changing these are two fields that will never stop changing so just be willing to learn and challenge yourself throughout your nursing career. Which using King’s theory of Goal Attainment pushes us as nurses to have more power over our perception, self, growth and development, body image, space, and time. Applying King’s theory. Applying King’s theory to nursing practice to overall improve initiative clinical nursing practice. Using king’s theory in this experience with a post op patient who has undergone cholecystectomy surgery. As a nurse you ask questions that usually lead to the determination if the patient realizes the risks factors of his/hers that his condition, how he or she understanding of an post op patient .After which, patient and I identified the problem patient lack of interest in ambulation and post op exercises. I as a nurse educated the patient the importance and risks of which may happen if patients not to understand the importance of ambulation after surgery. Which could lead to major complications. We then set a goal which is for the patient to remain free from post op complications. Next we agreed on the ways that we both selected, and I as a nurse assisted him in performing the appropriate actions after surgery are ambulation, deep breathing exercises, adequate intake of food and water to provide adequate nutrition. Which the overall outcome was the patient was free from complications was discharged home. Quality committee align outcome. Using King’s Conceptual System Theory throughout the research, there were limited resources on nursing informatics project management available. . There was an identified need for a nursing informatics, project management guidebook that combined the two worlds. In addition to the combination, links to scholarly articles and professional organizations were also made available. Upon dissemination of the scholarly product to the Clinical Informatics Sub Committee, it was evident the guidebook was well received by the 25 health care professionals based upon attendance, discussion during the implementation, and feedback on the approach. Moving forward, the Clinical Informatics Sub-Committee will create a program to discuss lessons learned which makes the guidebook more specific to the local military hospital. Florence Nightingale. Florence Nightingale additional nursing theory from our readings could also align with an improved quality of practice. Modern nursing is complex, ever changing, and multi focused. Since the time of Florence Nightingale, however, the goal of nursing has remained unchanged, namely to provide a safe and caring environment that promotes patient health and well- being. Effective use of an interpersonal tool, such as advocacy, enhances the care-giving environment. Nightingale used advocacy early and often in the development of modern nursing. There are complex care processes, complex health care technologies, complex patient needs and responses to therapeutic interventions, and complex organizations. There are tremendous opportunities and challenges in improving the quality and safety of health care, but the majority require purposeful redesign of health care organizations and processes. As A nurse you can easy combine the two theories together for quality patient care, most cost effective and the ultimate patient outcome. In Conclusion this is how Imogene King’s Goal Attainment theory plays a great role in my career as a nurse. References Caceres, Billy. (2015).
