The independent variable is background noise level. Condition A is no background noise and Condition B is background noise. The dependent variable is the math score that the 6th graders earned based on the math lesson.

The scale of measurement for the dependent variable of math scores is ratio as there is an absolute zero that is meaningful since the range of scores will vary from 0 to 100. Continuous data are numerical data that can theoretically be measured in infinitely small units and sometimes-continuous data are given discrete values at certain thresholds (Gravetter & Wallnau, 2013). The threshold for the math scores could be benchmark scores related to proficiency.
