  • Competency 3: Describe the role of media in relationship to women and criminal justice.
  • Competency 6: Communicate effectively.

Assignment Description

The media influences of pop culture have the ability to impact not only our preference for music, fashion, or style, but also our perceptions of what is considered “normal” or acceptable in society. In much of pop culture today, violence against women is gratuitous and glorified. Today’s media desensitizes and even promotes rape and gender violence. In recent years, popular songs have set the stage for violence against women and demonstrated how society perpetuates sex as a commodity. Legislators have recently argued that it may be time to set limits on entertainment content due to the widespread promotion of violence in movies, video games, TV, and music.

Prepare a 3-page paper, citing a minimum of two academically verified references, describing the role of violent media influences in relationship to women as victims of crime. Explain how these negative influences in pop culture may actually promote domestic violence against women. Break down the controversy surrounding the song “Animals” by Maroon 5 in your response.
