There are some employees that take advantage of the company’s assets and in those cases, the employer should have the right to limit those activities, especially if it is harming their productivity.

I feel that spot checks are necessary for the business to ensure that the employee is not downloading programs that could be a threat to the company. Employer’s need to be aware of those that are misusing the computer by sending unprofessional e-mails and surfing undesirable sites while at work. If this affects productivity or is offensive to others, it could become a hostile work environment (Schulman, 2000).

The implications for employees’ personal use of company assets could be that their productivity is down, the employee is not being a responsible individual and can create a security breach. The employer may become a victim of proprietary information being sent to the competition.

What approach will you take to address this issue with the jewelry company?

Internet searches can and will be monitored to ensure that the employees are not spending time looking up non-essential information, e-mails should always be professional while at the workplace and therefore, they can and will be monitored to ensure that the information in them is not offensive or derogatory.
